What Is Goalkeeper Coaching?
Who is It For?

Until recently, goalkeepers have typically been trained with the outfield players and not received specialised goalkeeper training. As a former goalkeeper, I recognise that goalkeeping requires very different skills to that of outfield players and have dedicated the past 15-20 years coaching goalkeepers. I have defined a process and methodology for developing high quality goalkeepers based on their age and skills level.

My process and methodology lean heavily towards game realistic training sessions being created in the coaching environment as opposed to isolated practices. This practice encourages the goalkeepers to be constantly making decisions and is easily transferred into the games.

Individual Goalkeepers

We offer both individual and group coaching sessions and many of our goalkeepers use a combination of these.

Individual sessions are private sessions with Dave Whalley and ideal for goalkeepers who are trying to improve specific skills or working towards specific goals.

Many goalkeepers have used this option to improve their goalkeeping knowledge and performance. All the attention is focused on the goalkeeper with a personnel and specific training program designed to address the areas that need to be improved on.

Group sessions are also coached by Dave Whalley. Each session has anywhere between 3 and 8 goalkeepers. Group sessions offer the added benefit of learning from other goalkeepers.

All goalkeepers taking part will see the benefit and improvement in their goalkeeping performance during these sessions.

These are a very cost-effective way to improve your performance.

Clubs

Working with the other coaches in the club, Dave Whalley Goalkeeping offers the opportunity to have your club’s goalkeepers brought together for an up to date and modern goalkeeper coaching program.

The goalkeeper position is such a crucial part of the side that every goalkeeper deserves the chance to be part of a specific goalkeeper training.

We aim to improve your club’s goalkeepers thus allowing your teams to become even more successful. This will also enhance your club’s reputation for the development of goalkeepers.

We can take sessions twice a week, once a week or once every 2 weeks or whatever suits the club.

Schools

Dave Whalley Goalkeeping currently coaches the young goalkeepers within the John Curtin College of the Arts Soccer Program and the South Coast Baptist College Soccer Program.

We are available to come into schools before, during or after school to assist with your schools goalkeeping program.

Holiday Clinics

Dave Whalley Goalkeeping runs clinics throughout the school holidays during the year.

These are a great way to improve your skills in a fun environment with other like-minded goalkeepers.

I run Goalkeeper Holiday Courses during Half Terms, Bank Holidays and all major School Holidays in the year such as Christmas and Summer; all taking place at Kingsnorth, Ashford. These a great way to engage in goalkeeping and football,

These clinics are suitable for all levels and abilities. Currently we run a clinic for young players between the ages of 10 yrs. – 16 yrs. along with an Elite session for the players 16 yrs. upwards.

Pre-season Camps

Dave Whalley Goalkeeping runs a 6-week pre-season camp from early November up until the Xmas period.

This gives goalkeepers the opportunity to work on their conditioning and goalkeeping skills It also ensures that they have a good level of fitness prior to commencing their clubs training.

These are run on a Weds evening at John Curtin School in Fremantle.

Strength and conditioning for goalkeepers is extremely important, as we are expected to perform explosive movements at a moment’s notice during a game. Goalkeepers require many athletic skills to be successful. The most common ones being power, quick reflexes and consistent body control.

About Me

My goalkeeping career started as an apprentice goalkeeper for Blackburn Rovers from 1983. I then went on to play semi-professional football for 16 years before relocating to Perth where I have been coaching goalkeepers since 2002.

I am passionate about helping aspiring goalkeepers of all ages and abilities to reach their full potential and it is my aim to help all goalkeepers play at the highest level they can.

Since DWG was established as a full time business in 2017, I am very proud of the work that has been accomplished. The results  achieved at DWG provide evidence of the attention to detail and methodical approach taken to the development of goalkeepers.

My objective is to maintain good relationships with all goalkeepers and coaches to facilitate the best learning environment possible.

I hold an FFA Advanced Level 2 Goalkeeping licence since 2014 and keep my knowledge up to date with weekly mentoring sessions with a UK based professional goalkeeping coach.
